Auroville Bio-regional Sports Development and Association

Sports activities have the power to bring people of different groups together and compete on a healthy and friendly platform. It promotes social and cultural exchange and also inculcates in participants values of discipline and team spirit.

We wish to form a Bio Regional sports association that will foster unity and skill development through a program of local sports facilities development and coaching that will lead to regular competitions on local, district and regional level.

Overview

Auroville Village Action Group (AVAG), Auroville Sports Resource Centre (AVSRC), Dehashakti and Paalam (bio-regional youth network) are joining forces for a concentrated development of sports in the bio region, including Auroville. It is also hoped that this project can be a bridge to creating career opportunities for local youth in sports with linkages to scholarships and sports colleges.

Auroville Bioregional Sports Event

Project Origin

The idea for this project has been birthed from an aspiration of the Paalam network. It had been an ambition of the Auroville Sports Resource Centre for many years to develop sports, in a scaled way, in the bio region. However, this has been difficult as they lacked the village contact networks.

AVAG with its extensive network of 337 mens and womens groups as well as the support and energy of Paalam members, has been a perfect partnership with Dehashakti team to take this idea forward.

As a first step, this partnership decided to hold a mini Auroville bio regional event this year (2016) as a first trial. This finished with great success having run over 3 Sundays in June with the finals on July 3rd 2016 with over 600 young men and women participating from Auroville and 20 village settlements.

Paalam members were very active in mobilising people from their villages and the general overall organisation. We now want to build on this success by developing a concentrated plan for the development of sports in the Auroville bio region as we have seen what a cohesive, unifying medium it can be.

This project is also a positive example of participatory development that can be achieved through collaboration between Auroville bodies, village bodies and established intermediaries.

  • I was struggling to pay the school fee of my elder daughter, and receiving an AVAG-AVVAI loan meant that I did not take her out of school against her wish, because thanks to Auroville Village Action Group, I was able to pay.

  • Women should be like this but they were kept aside. But women can do everything and it was truly proved only in this place. We were not happy in other places but here we are very happy. Even though we have sorrows at home, when we come here, Anbu Akka (sister) make us happy.

  • Amazing to see a huge women’s crowd. The way Anbu Akka and Village Action staff arrange this big event, is equal to 15 Tamil marriages. Much effort has been taken. Very useful for the people and I have seen them enjoying and happy. All sorrows have been forgotten. So it is a nice platform which you are creating Akka. It is really great!
