AVAL means “she” or “her” in Tamil, a brand that is made by women for the benefit of women. We are a social enterprise that has come into life with the help of Auroville Village Action Group (AVAG)
There are 57 women from different villages were trained in advanced tailoring as well as enterprise skills and started collective businesses. More are yet to join our programme. 29 of these women have been made part of AVAL.
Each product is hand-made, shaped with love and devotion to the cause of self-reliance and self-empowerment. The profit earned from these products will support development initiatives for women in the Auroville bioregion.
The essence of AVAL
At AVAL, rural women from Vanur block coming from traditional backgrounds meet contemporary designers from urban contexts varied from Bombay to France. Together, they use the platform AVAG provides to birth an aesthetic for a progressive Indian woman.
AVAL is the result of a deep cultural exchange alongside the upliftment of ladies from the Auroville Bioregion. We design not just clothes but a new life for the women by empowering them with livelihood skills making them active participants of India’s progress.
Our products are sold through Anjali; a stall dedicated to SEDAB products in Visitor’s Centre, Auroville. We also participate in exhibitions in Chennai and Pondicherry. AVAL products are available in boutiques in Pondicherry, Dakshinchitra in Chennai and Saturday’s Market at Youth Centre, Auroville.
