At AVAG, every individual life is valuable and we are happy to share stories of progress and empowerment from the villages of Vanur block.
“I am a member of “Puthiyapookkal” Women’s self help group (WSHG). Our SHG participated in the village exchange programme at Kazhuperumpakkam village arranged by AVAG. The host club “Marikozhundhu-A” WSHG members at Kazhuperumpakkam welcomed us by giving flowers.
The host club shared experiences on participating in village development works with the cooperation of AVAG and Village panchayat. It was very informative. We ate lunch prepared by the host club members. Then we visited a temple and a pond which is used for drinking water, and an ancient banyan tree where bats live. The village people never use firecrackers for any festival or programme to save the environment and to avoid disturbing the bats.
We enjoyed the full day with dance and singing.”

“I have been a SHG member for the last 12 years. I have received a lot of knowledge and outside exposure. Whenever I participate in the Women’s Seminar at AVAG, I listen to the information given in the seminar and pass this message on to my club in the monthly meetings. I received loans from AVAG and used it for the educational expenses of my grandchildren. Members in my SHG use AVAG microfinance loans for the purpose of agriculture and business. Some members use them for house construction. AVAG provides loan on lower interest rate. SHG members are not borrowing money from money lenders. AVAG clears our problems and I am very happy to be a member of SHG under AVAG.”
D.Karpagam, 55 years old, Udhayam Pudhunilavu WSHG, Uppuvellore village
“I joined the SHG 8 years back. Here I feel that we have a lot of support for everything. Five women's SHGs in my village together celebrate women's day every year by distributing notebooks to the school children and going on a one day exposure visit to various places.
We feel supported and happy. Four years back, five members in each SHG met the Panchayat President and requested to build a new village road. Within 6 months he has completed a new cement road to my village. We are all happy.”
S.Buvaneswari, 30 years old, Udhayam Nila WSHG, Anpakkam village
“I am a member of SHG since 9 years and running a fancy store in my village. I am also a member of the Executive Committee of Udhayam Women’s Federation. I attended a series of de-addiction trainings arranged by AVAG in partnership with a de-addiction centre in our area to promote awareness on alcoholism and rehabilitation. I started to speak about it to the customers who visit my shop, to my relatives and SHG members. So far I have helped five alcoholics to get treatment and rehabilitation. Their families are thankful for my help.”
